Tips for Relaxed Family Photos
You’ve coordinated a date that works with everyone’s schedule, narrowed down the color palette and picked out outfits and now you’re thinking ahead to the actual session. If just the thought of family photos stresses you out-then these tips are for family photos are for you!! My goal is always for your family to feel relaxed and comfortable so we can capture images that truly document the dynamics, love, and connection between you. Luckily, after many years of being an elementary school teacher and photographing many families, kids are my specialty!
- Lay out outfits the night before- trust me on this one. Lay out or hang up every single item of clothes for everyone, top to bottom. Yes, including hair bows, socks, and shoes! The last thing you want is to be running around at the last minute because you visualized a certain pair of shoes but can’t find them anywhere.
- Let go of your expectations-this one is a big one, but it’s arguably the most important one. Trusting your photographer to capture all the best moments can only happen if you are relaxed and confident that I’m focused on authentically documenting your family.
- Don’t worry about your kids-Because I know what it’s like to be in your shoes (and because I have children of my own!), I understand that sometimes kids just need a minute. It’s okay for us to take a break if a child needs a moment, or to follow their lead if they want to do something different.
- Snacks-when in doubt, bring a favorite snack or treat but don’t show it to them. It’s always good to have a snack on hand in case it’s needed!
Family photos should be a time to enjoy your children and allow me a peek into the love that makes your life special! Let go of your expectations for certain photos or having everyone look “perfect”. Often, your favorite photos come from the unexpected moments that occur naturally. And that’s what I can’t wait to capture!
