Bringing your newborn home is one of life’s most tender, special seasons—and capturing it beautifully is something you’ll never regret. But with the sleepless nights and constant feedings, the idea of preparing for a photo session might feel overwhelming. That’s why I’ve created this simple guide just for you: to take the stress out of getting ready and help you feel confident, relaxed, and excited to document this precious time. These 8 tips will help you prepare for your newborn photos and make sure the session is smooth, meaningful, and filled with the moments you’ll want to remember forever.
1. Keep Baby Comfortable
Your baby sets the tone for the session. Feed your baby shortly before the session to help them feel full and sleepy. Having a pacifier nearby can also go a long way in soothing your little one and keeping things calm and cozy.
2. Dress in Soft, Neutral Tones
Soft, timeless colors photograph beautifully and ensure the focus stays on your connection with your baby. Choose comfortable, neutral outfits for yourself and baby—think creams, soft greys, and muted pastels. Avoid bold patterns and logos that can distract from the emotion of the image.
3. Don’t Stress About a Perfect Home
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect house. As a mother of three, I remember what those first early days are like! All I need is good natural light and one or two tidy spots—often a bedroom or nursery. I’ll help move items if needed and guide you through every step, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
4. Go With the Flow
Babies are unpredictable, and that’s okay. Newborn sessions are always baby-led and there is no rush. We take plenty of breaks for feedings, diaper changes, and snuggles. Some of the most beautiful images happen in the in-between moments, so let go of expectations and trust the process.
5. Include the Whole Family
Husbands, siblings, and even pets are welcome! These early days are about more than just the baby—they’re about your whole growing family. I gently guide everyone to create natural, connection-filled images that reflect your love.
6. Communicate Any Concerns
If you’re feeling nervous about something—whether it’s how you look or how your baby will behave—please tell me! I’m here to make this a joyful, peaceful experience and to reassure you every step of the way.
7. Have a Spare Outfit (or two!)
Babies spit up, have blow outs, etc. I’ve seen it all and whatever happens, it’s okay! Make sure you have a back-up outfit (I always suggest two, just in case) that you love ready to go.
8. Wear a Dress You Feel Beautiful in
Postpartum is a tender time. Finding something to wear can feel tricky. Dresses with flowy material, knee length or longer, and comfortable material is a good starting point. My favorite shops for flattering and postpartum friendly dresses are Worth Collective (the dress Lindsey is wearing in the image above is from here!), Hill House, and Nothing Fits But.
Final Thoughts
You’re in the middle of a season that passes all too quickly. This session isn’t about perfection—it’s about documenting the love, connection, and beauty of these first days together. With just a little preparation, you can fully relax and soak in this time while I create images that will become part of your family’s story for generations.
