By far, the most commonly asked question by clients is what to wear for newborn photos. The uncertainty of dressing your postpartum body, not knowing which textures, colors, and prints photograph well, and not knowing how to coordinate, and not match, can be challenging! In this post, I’ll be showing you examples of dresses that do and don’t work, as well as linking my favorite stores to shop for dresses for your newborn photos. What to Avoid
- Steer clear of bright, bold colors, as they can reflect onto your skin and create an unnatural color cast in photos. Softer, neutral tones tend to photograph more beautifully and keep the focus on you and your baby..
- Choose smaller, more subtle patterns that won’t compete for attention. Bold prints can distract from the natural emotion of the moment and may take away from the timeless quality of your photos..
- Pay attention to the strap style when choosing a dress—finding supportive undergarments is key to feeling comfortable and confident. Dresses with wider straps, or sleeves, often pair better with everyday bras, helping you avoid purchasing new ones during a time when your size may still be changing.
- Avoid mini dresses. Mini dresses can be restrictive and may limit your movement—especially when cuddling or sitting with your baby.
- Although this is one of my favorite dresses and very flattering, the neckline may not be the right choice for you. If you’re fuller-chested, I recommend choosing necklines that offer a bit more coverage and support—especially during the postpartum season. This helps create a flattering silhouette and ensures you feel comfortable and confident in every photo
- Some fabrics are less forgiving on camera—fully polyester outfits, for example, can cling in unflattering ways or catch the light oddly.
What to Look For
- When choosing outfits for your newborn session, comfort and timelessness are key. Soft, natural tones—like light neutrals, earthy hues, or pastels—not only photograph beautifully but also help create a gentle, flattering look against your skin and your baby’s.
- Opt for longer hemlines to give you the freedom to move, cuddle, and sit comfortably throughout your session. Flowy, relaxed-fitting dresses are especially lovely during the postpartum season—they offer both comfort and a flattering silhouette without feeling restrictive.
- If you’re drawn to patterns, choose soft and subtle prints. Smaller designs add a touch of visual interest while still keeping the focus where it belongs: on your connection with your little one. The goal is to create images that feel timeless and full of warmth—something you’ll treasure for years to come.
Where to Shop
I personally prefer to buy dresses that can transition with me in different seasons, rather than buy strictly “maternity” clothes. The following shops are some of my favorite for elegant, comfortable, flattering, and timeless outfits.
- Worth Collective
- Nothing Fits But
- Quince
- Hill House
- Tuckernuck
- Doen
- Baltic Born
