Choosing a newborn photographer can be overwhelming! There are so many options and it can be hard to know who to pick. Do you use someone a friend recommended? Do you use someone that popped up on Instagram? To document such a momentous occasion, I think the decision absolutely merits some thought and careful research! Here are my recommendations to help you narrow down the right fit for you.

1. Lifestyle vs. posed. Lifestyle photography refers to more natural and authentic looking photos. Typically babies are photographed with their families and minimal props. Emphasis is placed on details like hair, toes, fingers, and on highlighting the love and connection between the family unit. Posed newborn photography often involves very tight wraps and swaddles, different colored/themed backgrounds, and props like beds, baskets, etc. Often, posed newborn photography only includes the baby and the sessions typically last anywhere from 2-4 hours.
2. In-home, in a studio, or outdoors. Some photographers specialize in only certain types of locations, like a studio. Others may offer a combination of these, or may come to your home. Consider what type of overall look you want to your photos and where you would feel most comfortable.
3. Budget. Newborn photography will range in price based on experience and services offered. Make sure to look through a photographer’s portfolio to get a sense of the quality and look you can expect from your own photos.
