You’ve just brought home your new little one and are so excited about capturing their little details! However, it’s normal to feel apprehensive about having a photographer in your home. After all, your home is a sacred space! Over the years that I have been photographing in-home newborn sessions, I’ve learned exactly the questions new parents have. This post will answer how I address 4 common concerns, so you can truly enjoy your in-home newborn session!

“What if my home doesn’t look photo ready?”

The purpose of your family photos is not to document the design of your home. Your home is already perfect because your family grows and lives in it! I have a keen eye for finding ideal light in your home. During the planning stage of your photos, we will talk through the spaces in your home you’d like to photograph in. For specific tips on how to prepare your home, I have a blog post for that! We will focus on the spaces and angles that give us the most amount of natural light for beautiful imagery. It’s important to be open to the spaces that have the most amount of natural light. The focus of the photos remains the love between your family.

“What if my baby doesn’t cooperate for the session?”

Almost every single parent tells me this at some point during the session (and that precious angel can do no wrong!). One of the most important aspect of my photos is that they are child-led. In-home newborn photos have a larger time block in order to accomodate baby’s needs. If baby is fussy and needs to be comforted, we do that. If baby needs to eat, we stop for that too. We honor your baby’s needs so that the session remains relaxed. Scheduling photos within the first two weeks also gives us an advantage, as babies tend to sleep through the photos at that stage.

“We just moved (or are about to move). What about the boxes?”

I have photographed many families who are either on the verge of moving, or are unpacking. The benefit of hiring a photographer who is also a military spouse is that I am well-versed in photographing in different circumstances. I have done session in homes that are completely boxed up and you would never know by looking at the photos. All we require for beautiful photos is sufficient natural light and your precious family. Anything else is just a bonus!

“Will my older child(ren) be too energetic for photos?”

As the mom of three children under 4 and a former elementary school teacher, children are my specialty! Children naturally create a playful atmosphere and their energy creates even more authentic moments. With energetic young children, we make sure to begin the photos with them. This allows us to get them at their best. When they’re ready for a break, we focus on baby only, mom and baby, and dad and baby photos. This allows us plenty of time to come back and get more photos when they’re ready. Another benefit of having an in-home newborn session is that your child will already feel comfortable in their environment and will easily be able to grab a snack or favorite toy for a break.

Your in-home newborn photos should feel relaxed, enjoyable, and easy. You’ll look back on your session fondly and be so thankful you took the time to preserve your baby’s first weeks. You can relax and be yourself-I’ll take care of the rest.
