If you’ve been scrolling Pinterest and wondering, “Can newborn photos be taken outdoors?” the answer is yes.
It’s my absolute favorite time of the year, because it means we get to photograph your babies outside! While many newborn sessions happen in a studio or at home, outdoor newborn photography is a popular option for families. If you love natural light, beautiful scenery, and a more relaxed, lifestyle-focused experience (with a bonus of not feeling like you need to tidy up your home!), it might be the right fit for your family.
As a Peoria, Illinois newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I hear is whether can take photos outside. The good news is that with the right timing, location, and preparation, outdoor newborn sessions can create incredibly meaningful images while still keeping your session relaxed and comfortable.

YES!
My outdoor newborn sessions are run the same as in-home or studio newborn photos. We focus less on intricate baby posing and more on documenting the connection between your family. Instead of placing baby in elaborate props, the emphasis is on cuddles, snuggles, tiny details, and the overwhelming joy that comes with welcoming a new baby.
Central Illinois outdoor newborn photography is typically done in a lifestyle approach. This means baby stays safely in mom or dad’s arms for much of the session while we capture natural interactions and genuine moments. This is also an excellent option if your home does not have adequate natural light, or you do not want to worry about having to get your home “ready” for photos.
Unlike in-home and studio newborn sessions that can be done year round, outdoor newborn sessions are done as long as the weather allows it. In Central Illinois, this is typically April to October (sometimes early November!).
Outdoor newborn sessions can be done at a location like Donovan Park, or can even be outside your home, like your front porch or backyard.

Let’s be honest: the newborn stage is tender and can be chaotic.
One reason many families choose outdoor newborn photography is that they don’t have to worry about cleaning the house, preparing a nursery, or finding rooms with enough natural light. Instead, we simply meet at a beautiful location and focus entirely on your family.
Outdoor sessions naturally encourage movement and interaction. Rather than focusing on perfect poses, we can capture genuine moments of your family together—walking, cuddling, laughing, and simply enjoying one another. Babies are also soothed by the fresh air and tend to be very content outside.
Many families choose locations that hold special significance: a family farm, favorite park, backyard, or another place connected to their story. These locations add another layer of meaning to your photographs.
