When most people hear “at-home family photos,” they think it means inviting a photographer into a perfectly clean house. As a mom of three, I know how that can make you feel. You may be nervous about your home looking “lived-in” or don’t want the stress of needing to tidy-in. But here’s the secret: photos at home don’t have to happen in your home. These playful backyard family photos are the best example of ordinary memories being magical. Babies splashing in the kiddie pool, eating popsicles, and walking around the property with their horses, that turn in to the most memorable moments.
As a Peoria IL family photographer, I’ve found that these sessions almost always feel the most genuine because they happen where your family already feels at home.
Wondering if a session at home is right for you? Here are three reasons I love backyard family sessions.

Let’s be honest-preparing your home for photos can feel overwhelming.
The laundry basket is always out. The toys somehow multiply overnight. There’s a list of little projects you’ve been meaning to finish for months.
The good news is that none of that matters!
Your backyard offers all the benefits of being at home without the pressure of making your house photo-ready.
Your children already know the space. They know where their favorite swing hangs, where they race their bikes, where they blow bubbles, and where they chase each other through the grass.
Because it’s familiar, everyone settles into the session much more quickly. Instead of spending the first twenty minutes warming up to a new location, your family simply starts doing what they already love to do together. Are you looking for more suggestions on how to prepare for your family photos? This blog post here is all about how to prepare (and enjoy!) your photos.

Years from now, you probably won’t remember exactly what everyone wore.
But you’ll remember that one summer your toddler insisted on eating popsicles every afternoon. You’ll remember the tiny inflatable pool that entertained everyone for hours. You’ll remember watering the flowers together before dinner or making homemade lemonade on the patio, or in this family’s case-playing with their horses.
Those ordinary moments become extraordinary with time.
That’s why I always encourage families to think about activities they genuinely enjoy together rather than trying to recreate Pinterest-perfect photos.
Maybe it’s chalk on the driveway, or roasting marshmallows around a fire pit.
Maybe it’s running through the sprinkler, picking tomatoes from the garden, or reading books on a blanket in the shade.
These aren’t just random photo props—they’re pieces of your family’s story.
One day, your children won’t just look at these images and see what they looked like. They’ll remember what childhood felt like, with the same nostalgia and affection that you remember yours.

One of the biggest differences between a backyard session and a traditional photo session is how quickly everyone relaxes.
Everyone is ready to play in their familiar environment, all you have to do is walk out the door.
That freedom creates the moments you can’t pose: the belly laughs after someone gets splashed, tiny hands reaching for another popsicle, siblings making up games together, parents laughing because something completely unexpected happened.
Those are the photographs families treasure most.
They’re full of movement, connection, and personality—not because anyone was trying to smile perfectly, but because they were genuinely enjoying time together.
You don’t need a picture-perfect house or a breathtaking location to create meaningful family photographs.
Sometimes, the most beautiful place is the one where your family already spends its happiest days. If your backyard is where summer memories are made, then it’s already the perfect backdrop!
As a Peoria IL family photographer, my goal isn’t just to create beautiful images—it’s to preserve the season of life you’re living right now, exactly as it feels.
Because someday, you’ll miss the little pool, the sticky popsicle hands, and the sound of bare feet running through the grass. And you’ll be so glad you chose to remember them.
