When you welcome your second, third, or fourth baby, it can be tempting to skip professional newborn photos.
Life is busier. You already have plenty of photos of your first baby. And the thought of getting everyone ready for a photo session can feel like one more thing on your list.
But your newest baby deserves to have their own story documented, too.
As a Peoria, Il newborn photographer, an in-home newborn session is one of my favorite ways to photograph growing families because it allows us to capture your family exactly as you are. Together, in the safety and comfort of your home, and in this precious season of life.
As a mom of three and a former elementary school teacher, I also know that photographing siblings isn’t always calm and predictable. And that’s okay. My job is to guide you through all the feelings and chaos that come with welcoming a new baby while making sure everyone feels comfortable along the way.

It’s very common for families to have professional newborn photos with their first baby and then skip them with subsequent children. But every baby changes your family!
Your fourth baby deserves photographs of the moment they became part of your family—not just the photos you took of their older siblings as newborns. The way your children interact with their new sibling, the way they fit into your arms, and what your family looked like during this particular season can never be recreated.
You’re not taking the same photos over again. You’re documenting a completely new chapter. One that is tender, with it’s own dynamic, and one that grows your family into it’s newest version.

One of the best things about photographing your newborn at home is that everything you need is already there.
If your toddler needs a snack, you have snacks. If your preschooler needs a break, their toys are right down the hall. If someone needs a diaper change or a new outfit, you don’t have to pack up the whole family.
We can move throughout your home, photographing in spaces with beautiful natural light—your bedroom, nursery, living room, or even your children’s rooms. And when someone needs a break, they can take one.
Another thing to keep in mind? Your children don’t participate in the entire session. That flexibility is especially helpful when you’re balancing a newborn with older siblings. Wondering the questions I hear most frequently? This blog post addresses the top 3 myths of in-home newborn photography.

They might! After all, we are talking about tiny humans. Someone may cry. Someone may refuse to hold the baby. Your toddler may need a snack five minutes after we started. Baby may need to eat. This is very normal!
As a mom of three, I understand the emotions that come with bringing a new baby home. And as a former elementary school teacher, I’ve spent years working with children of all different ages, personalities, and temperaments. You don’t have to apologize for your children or worry about making them cooperate.
I’ll guide you through the session and help you know when to step in, when to take a break, and when to simply let things unfold.

Your older children don’t have to sit perfectly still and smile while holding the baby.
Instead, I’ll look for the little things: A kiss on the baby’s forehead. Curious little fingers touching their toes. A sibling climbing onto the bed beside you. Your toddler snuggling into your side while you hold the baby.
Please don’t spend hours deep-cleaning your home before your session. You are not hosting me and we won’t photograph every room. I’ll help you choose a few spaces with the best light, and we’ll work within those areas. Clear away the things you don’t want in the photographs, make the beds, and then let the rest go.
Your home is the setting—not the subject. The most important thing happening there is that your family has grown.

Your family doesn’t have to be perfectly coordinated, perfectly behaved, or perfectly calm to have beautiful newborn photographs.
You can have a crying baby, a wiggly toddler, a snack break, and a few moments of chaos—and still walk away with photographs that you’ll treasure. You just need to show up!
I’ll take care of the rest. One day, your fourth baby won’t be this tiny, your older children won’t be this little, and you won’t remember all the details of what it felt like to have everyone together under one roof. That’s exactly why it’s worth documenting.

If you’re welcoming a new baby and wondering whether newborn photos are worth doing again, I hope you’ll consider an in-home session. It’s relaxed, flexible, and designed around your real family—not around getting everyone to behave perfectly for the camera.
