When you picture beautiful family photos, you might picture golden light, warm sunshine, and a summer evening spent chasing toddlers around a field.
And while I absolutely love a good golden-hour session, I want to let you in on a little secret:
Your family photos do not have to happen at sunset to be beautiful.
In fact, for many families (especially families with toddlers!), a morning session can be a better fit—and the results can be just as beautiful, meaningful, and full of connection.
That’s exactly why I love offering morning sessions at Luthy Botanical Gardens in Peoria, Illinois.
As a Peoria IL family and newborn photographer, I know firsthand that the “perfect” time for photos isn’t always the time that works best for your family. Especially when you have young children, trying to keep everyone happy, fed, and awake until sunset can feel like a lot to ask. I have the children that rise at 6:30 am and do not nap. Doing photos at sunset is absolutely not an option I would take.
Morning sessions give families another option: beautiful photos, beautiful light, and a relaxed experience that works with your family’s natural rhythm.

If you have young children, you probably already know that their moods can change dramatically throughout the day. By the time evening rolls around, everyone might be hungry, tired, overstimulated, or simply ready for pajamas.
Morning is often a completely different story. After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, your little ones may have more energy and patience for photos. They aren’t spending the entire session asking when they can go home for dinner or bed.
And let’s be honest—when your kids are happier, you probably are, too. That means more opportunities for genuine smiles, playful interactions, snuggles, and all of those little moments that make your family your family.

This is, hands down, my favorite benefit of morning sessions for families with young children. Sunset sessions can be beautiful, but depending on the time of year, they can also fall right in the middle of dinner and bedtime. And if your kids are anything like mine, bedtime is not exactly the time of day when everyone is at their most cooperative.
A morning session means you can take your photos, enjoy the rest of your day, and still make it home in time for naps, lunch, afternoon activities, and bedtime routines. You don’t have to choose between beautiful family photos and keeping your evening peaceful.
There is a common misconception that golden hour, or the time near sunset, is the only time to take beautiful photos outdoors.
It isn’t! While the warm, dreamy light of sunset is gorgeous, morning light has its own beauty (you can view a sunset session here to see the difference). It can feel fresh, soft, and airy—especially surrounded by the greenery and gardens at Luthy Botanical Gardens. A session at 10:30 am will not have a golden glow like it does at sunset, but it doesn’t make it any less beautiful!
One of the reasons I love morning sessions at Luthy Botanical Gardens is that the gardens provide such a beautiful backdrop for family and newborn photography. There is so much variety in one location, which means your gallery can feel like more than a collection of posed portraits. We can wander, explore, cuddle, play, and let your children interact with the environment around them. The gardens also give us plenty of opportunities to find beautiful pockets of light and greenery throughout your session.
As a mom and former elementary school teacher, I know that children don’t always follow the schedule we’d like them to. As a newborn and family photographer, I’ve learned that some of the best photos happen when we stop trying to force children into a perfect version of themselves. That’s one of the reasons I love offering options for families beyond the traditional sunset session. If your child is naturally happiest in the morning, let’s photograph them then! If your baby has a predictable morning routine, let’s work with it. If your family is exhausted by 7 p.m., there is absolutely no reason to make everyone wait until sunset just because that’s when you think family photos should happen.
The goal isn’t to fit your family into a photography schedule. The goal is to create a photography experience that fits your family.
While I love photographing newborns in the studio, morning sessions can also be a wonderful option for families who want an outdoor newborn experience.
Babies don’t know or care what time golden hour is. Morning sessions can give your family the opportunity to document this incredibly special season of life while your older children are still fresh and energetic.
Instead of trying to make it through an evening session with a tired toddler and a newborn who may or may not be interested in cooperating, we can embrace the time of day when your family is most likely to feel comfortable and connected.
Whether you’re welcoming a new baby or simply documenting your family as it is right now, the most important thing is that your photos feel like you.
There is nothing wrong with loving golden-hour photography. I love the golden glow it gives! But as a mother, I want my children to be content more than I want a sunset. Sunset is not your only option for beautiful photos.
